Cost of Queen’s funeral Revealed £162m by Government

The UK government spent an estimated £162 million on the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the period of mourning that followed her death.

The Home Office paid the most, at £74 million, followed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport at £57.4 million. The Scottish government spent £18.8 million, the Welsh government £2 million, and the Northern Ireland office £2 million.

The funeral was attended by world leaders including US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council said the funeral was the largest police operation ever undertaken by the Metropolitan Police, ahead of the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics in 2012.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury John Glen said Queen Elizabeth II’s death was a “moment of huge national significance” and that the government had to ensure the surrounding events “ran smoothly and with the appropriate level of dignity, while at all times ensuring the safety and security of the public”.
