UK strikes: half a million workers demand ‘fair pay’ as through living crisis recession

Half a million striking workers made Wednesday the biggest mass action in the UK since 2011.

Yesterday, thousands of teachers, university staff, civil servants and train workers took to the picket lines in England, Wales and Scotland.

Working parents were left with no other option than to make alternative arrangements for their children, as many schools and colleges closed for most or all pupils.

The head of the TUC marched with the demonstrators in London and urged Prime Minister Boris Johnson to “get round the table and deliver on public sector pay”. Over 70,000 University staff from the UCU and around 100,000 civil servants from 120 government departments were among those on strike, as well as some London bus services.

The RMT unions had thousands of train workers out on strike.
