Watford Politicians shocked at local murder

Local Politicians shocked at aweful stabbing of Luke O’Connell who died.

Floral trbutes have been left in Callowland Park next to the scene.

Watford’s MP Richard Harrington tweeted “Shocked to hear of this morning’s incidents in Watford.  The police were on the scene within minutes & have been doing an excellent job.”

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said:“This has been a shocking and tragic incident for Watford and my thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends who are having to come to terms with the worst news any of us can imagine receiving about a loved one. “I have been reassured by the speed the police have dealt with the incident and in making an arrest.  Violence of this kind will never be tolerated in Watford.” He added: “Working together we will support each other and do everything we can to stop those who cause heartache to local families and disrupt the town with this type of dreadful criminal behaviour”.

Callowland Labour councillor Sohail Bashir, called the incident “tragic”. He said: “This is a very tragic incident and one where a man sadly lost his life. “We are very concerned about the matter and I would like to reassure residents that police have the matter under control.” Ian Stotesbury, Liberal Democrat councillor for the Callowland Ward area, echoed Mr Bashir’s comments and felt it was great to see police “reacting like they have”.

Leggatts Ward councillor Asif Khan said: “I am truly saddened and shocked by the incident. My deepest condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends who are devastated by the loss of Luke.  “This is a rare occurrence in North Watford and the whole community is stunned by what has happened.

“It’s really important that people come forward to the Police if they saw the incident.” “My thoughts are with the victims and the families. I am sure the community and police will stand together.” Two men have been charged. The family of Luke O’Connell are appealing to anyone who may have any information about what happened to him to contact police.

His mum said: “As you can imagine we are absolutely devastated at what has happened to Luke. He had his whole life ahead of him and we are heartbroken. Detective Chief Inspector Justine Jenkins, from the BCH Major Crime Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this awful time and they are being supported by specially trained officers. “In particular, I would like to hear from anyone who believes they might have dash cam footage of any of the vehicles in Watford overnight on Friday 30 August into this morning.”
