About Watford

Watford town is a borough in Hertfordshire, England, situated 17 miles (27 km) northwest of central London and within the circumference of the M25 motorway. It is not to be confused with Watford (gap), Northamptonshire which is 55 miles to the north.

The borough is separated from Greater London to the south by the urbanised parish of Watford Rural in the Three Rivers District.

The Watford subdivision of the Greater London Urban Area, which includes much of the neighbouring districts.

In the 2011 census population of 90,301 and is made up of approximately 50% females and 50% males. This was an increase of 13.3% compared to the figure of 79,726 from the 2001 Census.

The average age of people in Watford is 36, while the median age is lower at 35.73.0% of people living in Watford were born in England. Other top answers for country of birth were 3.0% Pakistan, 2.5% India, 1.6% Ireland, 1.4% Sri Lanka, 1.1% Scotland, 0.8% Kenya, 0.8% Wales, 0.7% Philippines, 0.6% South Africa.

This is in the county of Hertfordshire, which in 2013 the population was 1,140,700 living in an area of 634 square miles (1,640 km2). Four towns have between 50,000 and 100,000 residents: Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, Watford and St Albans.

Hertfordshire County Council designates Watford, along with Stevenage, to be its major sub-regional centre. Several head offices of national companies and multi-nationals are based in Watford.

Both the 2016 World Golf Championship and the 2013 Bilderberg Conference took place at The Grove hotel.

The Towns Football Team play at Vicarage Road Stadium.

The county town, Hertford, was the main market town for the medieval agricultural county ranks 13th in population today deriving its name from a hart (stag) and a ford used as the components of the county’s coat of arms and flag.

Hertford is derived from the Anglo-Saxon heort ford, meaning deer crossing (of a watercourse).
