Elstree Aerodrome Public Consultation 2024: Public Invited to Weigh in on Future Developments
Residents near Elstree Aerodrome are being given a chance to voice their opinions on plans to build a new hangar for helicopter maintenance. The Hertsmere Borough Council is holding a public consultation on the proposal, which has some residents concerned about potential noise and safety issues.
Elstree Aerodrome, a key hub for general aviation in Hertfordshire, is currently at the center of a significant public consultation. The consultation, which began in July 2024, focuses on a proposed expansion aimed at enhancing the aerodrome’s helicopter maintenance capabilities.
The Proposal
The primary aspect of the proposal involves constructing a new hangar capable of accommodating up to four helicopters. This development is part of an agreement with Leonardo, a leading helicopter manufacturer, to bolster maintenance services at the airport. The new hangar is expected to be located at the northern end of the airfield, although exact details regarding its size and precise location are still under discussion.
Community Engagement
The public consultation event is being held in the southeast hangar of the aerodrome, providing a platform for local residents and stakeholders to review the plans and offer their feedback. The event is designed to ensure transparency and community involvement in the decision-making process. Residents have expressed a mix of excitement and concern, with many eager to see the potential economic benefits while others worry about increased noise and environmental impact.
Local Government and Stakeholder Involvement
Aldenham Parish Council has been actively involved in the consultation process, emphasizing the importance of community input. Conservative county councillor Caroline Clapper attended the event, highlighting the significance of the development for the local area and encouraging residents to participate. The aerodrome has submitted a pre-application under permitted development to Hertsmere Borough Council, although the plans are not yet available on the council’s website.
Potential Benefits and Concerns
The proposed expansion is expected to bring several benefits, including job creation and enhanced maintenance capabilities, which could attract more business to the aerodrome. However, some residents have raised concerns about potential noise pollution and the environmental impact of increased helicopter traffic1. The consultation aims to address these concerns by providing detailed information and seeking community feedback to shape the final proposal.
Conclusion
The Elstree Aerodrome public consultation represents a crucial step in the development process, ensuring that the voices of local residents are heard and considered. As the consultation continues, it remains to be seen how the feedback will influence the final plans and what the future holds for this important aviation hub.
