Peregrine Falcon takes up residence at the YMCA

A pair of peregrine falcons have successfully raised four chicks on the roof ledge of YMCA’s Charter House Hostel.

Sounds of screeching could be heard on the ring road below the YMCA in Watford.

Screeching could be heard, it could almost be mistaken for squeaking from drilling equipment from the building site of charter place.

A passerby spotted this bird of prey hovering whilst squawking at something on the car park roof.

“I thought it was a kestrel, I tried to get to the top floor but it was blocked off as restricted access.”

I noticed the car park adjacent on the other side of the ring road and thought I might get a look from there and then could see everything.”

At first, I saw or heard nothing but decided to video, and that’s when I heard the screeching return and spotted the fastest bird in the world.”

The RSPB said, “Buildings and other constructions are increasingly being used by nesting peregrines.”

” Peregrines are territorial, with each territory containing one or more nest sites – this may explain the behaviour of the peregrine towards the builders.”

Donna Lawrie, Head of Marketing of One YMCA, said: “At One YMCA we believe everyone should have a safe place to live and we can now apply this to the Peregrine Falcons.

“In our hostels and shared housing, we are used to seeing positive move-on and our youth work supports young people to a greater level of independence, so it was very interesting to be able to see the Peregrine falcon family succeeding in the same way on the Webcam donated by Express Telephony. We are looking forward to them returning again next year.”
