E-Scooter Hit-and-Run Left Cyclist Hospitalised

Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire – Police are urgently appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage following a serious road traffic collision that occurred on Ridgeway at around 8pm yesterday (Sunday, 28 July).

A cyclist has been hospitalised after her bicycle and an e-scooter collided, that left the scene.  The rider of the bicycle, a woman in her forties, sustained potentially life-threatening injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The rider of the e-scooter failed to stop at the scene, prompting a police appeal for any information that could assist in identifying the individual involved. PC Christopher Rowley-Smith from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit stated, “Our enquiries are continuing, and I am appealing for any witnesses to please come forward. Were you driving in the area at the time and saw what happened? Additionally, if you have a dash cam fitted, please check it as you may have recorded some crucial footage to assist our investigation.”

PC Christopher Rowley-Smith, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries are continuing, and I am appealing for any witnesses to please come forward.

“I would like to remind people that it is currently illegal to ride e-scooters on public land anywhere in Hertfordshire. E-scooters can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission. While they can be used on public land as part of a government trial, there are no trials taking place anywhere in the county at this time.”

Anyone with information is urged to report it online, speak to an operator via the police’s online web chat, or call the non-emergency number 101, quoting ISR 668 of 28 July, 2024. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form.

The police are hopeful that with the community’s assistance, they can swiftly bring the responsible party to justice and ensure the safety of all road users in the area.
