CECA Southern Annual Lunch & Awards in the St Albans and Watford area

The Annual Lunch and Awards Event took place at The Brewery, London on Friday 1 July after an absence of two years, the event brought together nearly 400 people to the biggest networking event of the CECA Southern calendar.

Robert Named the South’s Most Promising Level 4-7 Apprentice

Robert Chihaia, originally from Romania, has been named the Most Promising Apprentice Level 4-7 at the recent Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Southern Annual Lunch & Awards event.

Robert received the accolade for his exceptional performance and career progression since joining Barhale in St. Albans in 2016 as a Graduate Engineer.

He was one of five young people recognised for exceptional performance and dedication at the ceremony held at The Brewery in London.

Robert’s exceptional qualities were soon recognised by Barhale and he was fast-tracked to the role of Site Engineer, Sub Agent and Site Agent. He demonstrated an ability to work on both complex civil engineering and mechanical engineering projects from design to commissioning. He was a key player in the successful delivery of a multi-million pound tunnelling project for Thames Water, a £700,000 sailing club mooring project and a £1.1m project for Affinity Water.

Samantha Barratt, CECA Southern Chair, commented: “Robert is a committed and hard-working individual. The proof is clear through his achievement in graduating with a master’s degree in Structural Engineering and a business and management degree whilst working full time over a 5-year period. He also became a Chartered member of the CMI (Chartered Management Institute) and a Member of the ICE (Institute of Civil Engineering) – EngTech level in the same period.

Joshua Named the South’s Most Promising Level 2-3 Apprentice

Joshua Maney, from Watford, has been named the Most Promising Apprentice (Level 2-3) at the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Southern Annual Lunch & Awards event.

Josh recently completed his Level 3 Health, Safety & Environment Technician Apprenticeship and received the accolade for his exceptional performance and career progression since joining Barhale’s St Albans office.

He was one of five young people recognised at the CECA Southern event in London for exceptional workplace performance and commitment.

At Barhale, Josh is part of the HSEQ team, helping with safety site audits and inspections. He is now the company’s Service Avoidance Champion within the region, responsible for ensuring operatives are competent, trained and assessed for the tasks they undertake. He created a digital information hub that all employees can access.

Josh is also an active member of CECA NextGen, a group founded to promote civil engineering and construction to future generations.

“As an industry, we need to encourage and attract talented people like Josh because they will play a key role in building the infrastructure the UK needs to create a low carbon, sustainable economy.”

Tom Named the South’s Most Promising Trainee Quantity Surveyor

Tom Green, from St Albans has been named the south’s Most Promising Trainee Quantity Surveyor at the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Southern Annual Lunch & Awards event.

Tom received the accolade in recognition for his exceptional performance since joining FM Conway Structures central asset management team in Westminster, a leading infrastructure services company. He was one of five young people recognised for outstanding workplace performance and commitment at the ceremony held at The Brewery in London.

Tom joined FM Conway direct from college in September 2019 as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor and initially worked on the highly valued Westminster City Council Term Maintenance contract. He started on small projects but soon progressed to completing estimates of up to £50k. He has also been a key driver of FM Conway’s net zero ambitions, engaged with carbon reduction forums and overseeing the introduction of two E-cargo bikes used for logistical deliveries around London. He also led on a review of sites to enable equality of access for people with disabilities.

Samantha Barratt, CECA Southern Chair, commented: “Tom is a highly confident professional demonstrating maturity beyond his years and an appetite to succeed. His passion for sustainable working practices, combined with his ambitious character, will ensure he goes far and he continues to be a shining example that will inspire our next generation of talent.

“As an industry, we need to encourage and attract talented people like Tom because they will play a key role in building the infrastructure the UK needs to create a low carbon, sustainable economy.”

The CECA Southern Lunch & Awards are presented annually in recognition of exceptional performance, with each winner receiving a trophy and cheque for £500.

  • Outstanding Contribution/Lifetime Achievement Award – Lynn Puttock (Land and Water Ltd)
  • Workplace Wellbeing Initiative – FM Conway Ltd

CECA Southern has also awarded ‘Highly Commended’ to the following, who will receive a certificate and cheque for £250:

  • Highly Commended Industrial Placement – Tom Baker (Milestone Infrastructure)
  • Highly Commended Apprentice Level 2-3 – Yusuf Sheikh (Taylor Woodrow)
  • Highly Commended Apprentice Level 4-7 – William Pickles (JT Mackley & Co)
  • Highly Commended Trainee Quantity Surveyor – Ellen Yuksel (VolkerHighways)
  • Highly Commended Trainee Civil Engineer – Molly McMaster (VolkerStevin)
