The Department for Education say the start of term is being delayed as a result of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete.

HCC have identified 127 schools with buildings constructed between 1950 and 1958, or between 1990 and 1995, and are now establishing which of these will need to be surveyed for RAAC.

In surveys carried out in 2020 and 2021, Herts County Council identified three schools that contained RAAC and therefore needed remediation works.

The schools were:

Widford School
Bushey & Oxhey Infants School
Markyate Village School and Nursery.

These works were completed in 2022, and the schools are now operating as normal.

HCC is also aware of an academy school in Hertfordshire, St John’s Catholic Primary, that has needed remediation work because of RAAC found in a school building last year.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer accused the Conservatives of spending 13 years “cutting corners”, and compared ministers to “cowboy builders”.

The Liberal Democrats’ education spokesperson, Munira Wilson, also called for Mr Sunak to “come clean over his own role in this crisis”, and publish evidence given to him when he was chancellor on the risks to children’s safety from RAAC.
